Multiple Great White Sightings at Sunset Beach

A flurry of Great White Shark activity has LA stirring

A flurry of Great White Shark activity has LA stirring

The Shark Research Committee has published three separate reports of Great White Sightings (by way of Scott at Sunsetsurf.com) over the course of the last couple of days at Sunset Beach in Pacific Palisades, California. All three reports come from the surfing community, who, amazingly, were not convinced to leave the water at the times of any of the sightings. Whether or not it is the same animal that has been sighted, breaching behavior by the Great White Shark(s) in question has been seen on all three occasions.

Is Sunset Beach the newest regular hunting ground for white death, aka The Fear Beneath?

“Today around 8:15 AM, just south of the point at Sunset near Gladstones, there were 10 – 12 other surfers witnessed a white shark breach. I myself only saw the whitewash ripples from the shark’s reentry. It was described by others as breaching the surface and turning over showing its white under belly. Everyone said it was large, approximately 10 – 12 feet in length.”

Yep saw it – this morning at approx 7am – three separate breaches by a 7-8 ft great white about 100 yds off the coast at Sunset just south of the point. There was a collective “whoa” by the local surfers, but the surf was too good to get out of the water…

  2. Fact: It is more dangerous to swim the waters of Northern Santa Barbara County (i.e. Point Conception) than it is to swim on the North Shore of Oahu. (Source: Discovery Channel Shark Week [2007]).

Jul 18, 2009 I saw a shark breach southwest of the point at Sunset this morning around 650am
The shark came completely out of the water and turned on its back so I coudl see its white bellly and dark gray back, The shark appeared to be about 5-6 feet in length.
This is my 2nd sighting in 10 days at Sunset. I have been surfing in LA for 14 years and have never seen this!

That's quite scary, thanks for sharing this information, BTW I just love reading and writing about sharks!

  10. Roman Shchur says:

Saw a 10′ to 12′ great white shark yesterday (12/10/2008) at 4pm while fishing the shipwreck in santa monica. It followed my sardine all the way to the boat then paused looked at us turned arond and went back down. It was huge! Never seen anything like that before.

  11. Purity Please says:

I hear great white sharks prefer spongers and are developing an acute taste for stand-up paddle boarders.

  12. Baywatch Guy says:

I was a lifeguard from 1999 – 2005 in the Santa Monica area. There were several instances of great white shark sightings. On two separate occasions multiple helicopters from local news outlets hovered for hours covering the sharks “live” from Santa Monica Bay. You could see the shadows of 5 great white sharks who had gathered for some unknwon reason and it was this exact location at Sunset and PCH where this previously happened!
