BIG ISLAND, HAWAII

Big Island officials closed Hapuna and Wailea beaches this afternoon after a 12-foot tiger shark was seen about 30 yards offshore, according to an e-mailed news release from the Fire Department and Ocean Safety Division.

Anyone planning to visit beaches in the South Kohala area are asked to exercise caution and obey any posted warnings from the Department of Natural Resources.

Big Island firefighters and state officials are monitoring the water for shark activity and will re-evaluate the closure tomorrow morning.

    shame on u joan. the ocean belongs to the sharks, not us. what disrespect to the sea and its natural inhabitants. just read what you wrote....can u actually condone killing something that is alive and free just so we can play around in the sea. just accept it for the few months that the large tigers are here. soon the season will change and they will go on vacation

    A shark or sharks have already attacked and killed a man in the area of Mckenzie Park....Sightings of sharks in the news this past several days.....Why aren't they killing the sharks? Are they going to wait till a child gets biten?
