EXCLUSIVE!!! Shark Attacks Surfer at Surf Beach, Lompoc

drudge siren EXCLUSIVE!!! Shark Attacks Surfer at Surf Beach, LompocThe Fear Beneath brings you an *exclusive* report from the shark-y waters of Lompoc, in Northern Santa Barbara County, where earlier this year we reported on our exclusive picture of a Bixby White Shark Kill! Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to either The Fear Beneath or The Shark Research Committee.

Shark Attacks Surfer in Surf Beach, Lompoc
(Santa Barbara County)

SURF BEACH, LOMPOC

NORTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Our sources tell us that while out surfing, a friend of theirs – Kyle (last name withheld,) was on “the outside reform” at Surf Beach Monday when a large shark began to circle him. Kyle used his surfboard as a shield and pointed the fins of his board towards the shark.

The result are these AMAZING pictures… Be sure to notice the diameter of the shark’s mouth – it is tremendous!

This looks to us like a Great White Shark, possibly 14-16 feet in length, doing some late summer hunting at your local surf spot! Be certain to use caution and have a high awareness level when recreating in this area for at least the next week.

Follow up on this story – 2 years later – UCSB boogie boarder was attacked and killed by shark in same spot. Also – following kyle’s encounters, there were many more reports from surfers seeing the shark.

I have been surfing the central coast for over 30 years. I have encountered numerous GW’s and only been bothered twice by them. I carry a 12″ bolo knife and if they do fuck with me. I kill them.

I just saw this thread…cannot believe this shark is still around at Surf Beach…but this time finished the job. SCARY.

These beaches have always been considered fishing beaches. Has something changed? Is Vandenberg dumping, as they have in other waters? These beaches have always been beautiful to walk and watch sunsets…surfing? Hmmmm not so much.

last wednesday the 18 was stand up paddling at sunset pacific palisades, been surfing the malibu area since 60's never saw this. size of large dolphin swam under me clear 10 foot to bottom, slowly cursing by large cycle shaped virtical tail extra bloated mid section dark grey brown wide base dorsel fincould not believe i was seeing this. watched it swim fifty feet away towards surfer then turned back towards me but did not get an aggressive vib it seemed to be closer to the bottom maybe looking for fish it then turned away from me and went south towards beach club. hard to say but had to be 8 foot range. really amazing told the surfer it swam towards but he diden't seem to believe me or be concerned.

My buddy and I launched our boat at Gaviota to fish near Point Conception yesterday. I swear to god we saw the biggest shark I have ever seen. It was a great white at least 15 feet long and surfaced when i was bringing in a decent sized catch. It grabbed my catch when it was near the surface and the line snapped in all of 2 seconds. My friend shit in his pants. I’ve seen sharks along this stretch of coast before but never a GW.

You guys are ridiculous, your assumptions and uneducated comments about Great White Sharks are ludicrous. They are an amazing, calculated, and cautious predator. They are not man eaters and spend 85% of their life’s in the open ocean. When they do swim along the surf line, it is to rest and absorb the high levels of oxygen that are churned up by the surf. A 16 foot animal can NOT SWIM IN A KELP FOREST, around yes. And if they really were a menace to the ocean they would NOT be protected and there would be far more attacks on people. The Great White Sharks on the North American Coast are the largest in the world, they EAT ELEPHANT SEALS, which are 2000 pound + pieces of fat, they do not eat boney pieces of s**t like you. I repeat if we were on their menu, there would be a lot more dead surfer, but magically there is not, I wonder why. Great White Sharks are a magnificent animals that command respect, much is still unknown about them, but there is a great deal we have researched and know, I will not explain any further on this forum for fear that it will fall on deaf ears. If you really do have a fear of sharks because of ignorance or fear from movies (same thing), I suggest learning to scuba dive and actually sticking your head underwater to see what is going on down there. See how depleted our oceans are from fishing and polluting and how scarce sharks really are. Take a trip to the Channel Islands and see for yourself. You will also see how humans have depleted and abused the oceans resources and how vulnerable the ecosystem is. We hold the balance of the ocean at our fingertips, with our decisions to recycle or litter, to eat fish from dredge net fishermen, and to dump our waste in the ocean. Finally if I ever see someone hunting a Great White Shark, I can promise I will do the same to you.

    • Berninfl

      Dear Mike
I live in Florida, the shark bite capital of the world. I agree that most shark attacks are due to muddy water and mistaken identity, or other cases of just bad timing such as swimming with baitfish. The bull shark is far more dangerous than the white shark, yet white sharks attack their prey on the first strike and try to injure it, so they can return to eat their food without damage to their eyes or body –or having to expell energy that is more than the energy they consume. This poor surfer was “probed” by a very large white shark and it killed them. Yes, it is to bad that this magnificant fish eats people and if I ever come across one that is unprotected waters, rest assured it is one dead shark. It’s people like you that should be eaten. How soon we forget. Haven’t you ever read the story of Timothy Treadwell?

    • Berninfl

      Oh Mike,
The Kelp beds off of Californias coasts do not stop 15-20 foot GW sharks LOL. Where did you here this rubbish. I’m sure you are a believer and every one has the right to believe in what they want –even if they’re wrong.
Best regards to you and yours

I have been hearing the rumors about this, I went out to surf last week and I don’t know how any of you can surf that shit but regardless, I go to a place just a wee bit south of Gaviota close to Refugio would it be considered safe? I always see seals popping out of the water, should that be the first sign of trouble?

Looks like Ralph interviewed Kyle on September 23rd – from the SRC pacific coast shark news:

“It was about 10:30 AM and I had been alone on the water for about 30 minutes. The sky was overcast and the ocean glassy calm with ‘shoulder high’ swells. When entering the water I observed a lone seal close inshore. After entering the water I was about 50 yards from the beach. While sitting on my board a pod of 10 – 15 dolphins swam right through my area heading from North to South. The dolphins were jumping out of the water as I have frequently observed when surfing. About a minute later I was hit from the back (tail of board) and lifted slowly out of the water as the shark pushed me 1 – 2 feet forward. I slid off the left side of my board as the shark pushed my board forward. The shark came to the surface with my board in its mouth. It was on my right and so close to me that I could see its eye roll back in the socket as it kept pushing and biting my board. The sensory pores on the underside of the snout were visible as I started to swim backwards while facing the shark. It began to thrash wildly in the water and I was struck by its tail as it descended out of sight. The Great White Shark was 10 – 12 feet in length and light grey in color. I swam to my board, which was now 15 – 20 feet away, climbed on and paddled to shore. This is the third shark I’ve seen from this location and second in the last month.”

I had never heard of this spot called Jalamas.

Even though I consider Rincon my home break during the winter (it’s only a 45 minute drive from where I live), maybe I will have to start calling Jalamas my year-round home break.

I have a bunch of cool valley surfers who really want to check it out. I even asked Bret at Val Surf about it who said Jalamas has great hamburgers too??!!

Is it best on a south? It sounds like everybody is friendly there, no?

Is it best on a south? It sounds like everybody is friendly there, no?

    Jalamas here I come!!!!!

I do in fact surf. I just really don’t feel the need to bash others for where they surf…unless you are from Pismo, then we all you are just pissed because, well, you are from Pismo.

Actually, if you are from Lompoc, you may be pissed as well. We all know Lompoc is a terrible spot to live if you surf. Lets examine why…

    1. No surf at all. None.
    2. Too many sharks! But that’s OK, because they only attack surfers from Lompoc who may see it as a fitting end to a shitty life living in the ‘Poc.
    3. Not enough Mexican food restaurants. Taco Loco 1 through 8 just isn’t really enough when you crave extended stays on the shitter blowing your lower intestine out your ass.
    4. G-Deek lives there and he is a dork. But at least his dog is cool.
    5. All the surfers form there have terrible style.

It take about 16 hours to drive the state of California, Lompoc is about 4 1/2 hours from the southern border, YOU LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA like it or not. Lompoc locals are on the same level as all of the rest of southern cali, you all have definately proven it with this BS. Now everybody will know how good it is down there.
JALAMA BEACH HAS GREAT WAVES YEAR ROUND
Go to jalamabeach.com or call 805-736-6316
The Jalama beach store has everything you will need for camping or to quench your thirst after the awsome surf sesion you will most likely have.
Spread the word on Southern California’s hotest secret JALAMA BEACH CALIFORNIA
Last year my friends and I scored Jalama 6-8 foot and perfect. We came down for the week and it was epic 6 out of the 7 days we were there. There were a few locals out but they were really nice and for the most part would only ride the medium to smaller sets. This place is my favorite spot to surf in southern California. I was going to hold off but now I think I will post some of the video on youtube.
    See you in the lineup

fake.. one does not play games or mess around with a story or silly banter if you actaully met face to face with a great white…or have seen 3 sharks in your local spot in a month…few people are brave enough to have seen these huge sharks cruse their line-up and then proceed out…psychologically you have to have issues…and if the tail of a 14′ GW hit you I am surprised it did not cause damage that required a ER check…
-5150 as danger to yourself and/or others…paddle out at the Farallon Islands, no crowds above

This story is a classic example of southern california overhype. You pussies in lompoc (southern california) shoud keep your mouths shut about your surfing and what happens in the water or else you will draw attention to yourselves and your surf spots. There are surf spots on the west coast with far more sharks and much better waves, but the locals keep their mouths shut about what happens because they are more interested in keeping their spots to themselves. HEY EVERYBODY LETS GO TO SURF BEACH AND JALAMA BEACH THERE ARE GREAT WAVES GOOD CAMPGROUNDS AND GOOD FOOD.

Thank you for supporting my new dietary habits, however, surfers are only a supplement to my diet. Yes they do put up less of a fight and their bone marrow is quite nutritious but I will still seek your kind out and induldge, even if it meens getting all that blubber in my teeth.
PS. Do you know any other secret surf spots that I may have any luck with? I have heard of a great wave called Hazards neer San Luis Obispo. Are there any prospects around this area? Is it close to Jalama beach?

I was surfing Jalama the 9th and 10th. Upon calling my buddy for a surf check in the Malibu area he asked if I had seen a great white as he had friends who were also surfing there and claimed they saw a whitey cruising the surf zone from the cliff. I didn’t notice anything. If he really was there someone woulda yelled or passed the word on I would think rather than watch from above as someone gets chomped. I hear of this report. Possible yes. Not publicized more questionable. If the shark research comitee can verify I”ll believe it. Shark stories to deter crowds north of El Cap are far from news. Point conception north is a wave rich area with relatively light crowds. You take the risk paddling out anywhere north of there. Maybe the locals just aren’t happy the gas prices aren’t detering more people making the trek to their breaks this year?

One thing that scares the crap out of my wetsuit when surfing at Surf beach is when all the birds go on a feeding frenzy diving in the water and flying in circles. And then you see alot of turbulance in the water from all the fish they are trying to catch! that freaks me out! They are out there (GW’s), I have seen one at Jalama too!
You just cant think about them. if your time is up so be it! It would be a shitty way to go!

    To the Fear Beneath Community,

Yes I did originaly post stupid comments under the name anonymus because I felt the story to be rather ridiculous and funny. So I joined in, and later after hearing crazy story after crazy story I got a little fed up. The reality of the situation is it didn’t need to come to all this talk and thats why in the first place I didn’t want to talk about it.

How it all went down was this in a nut shell.
I was surfing alone and a pod of dolphins cruzed thru and about a minute later I was hit from the back (tail of board) and lifted out of the water. I looked eye to eye with this shark as it passed me with my board in it’s mouth, as it thrashed around I asume to spit my board out it’s tail hit me and basically disapeared.
Call me a pussy but I’ve never been so scared in my life. That is the third shark I’ve seen there and second in the last month.
There it is, sorry you got the wrong info in the first place, I will have to talk to John O and Drew about the bogus e-mail you recieved.
Martin you can contact Ralph Collier about this Im sure you are familulaur with Ralph at S.R.C.

We published the email and pictures almost verbatim as they were sent to us by our source. What don’t you understand about that?

    http://www.fearbeneath.com/2008/09/surf-beach-shark-attack-details-disputed/

It’s somewhat hilarious that there’s so much dispute over the matter and yet nobody has the balls to step forward and tell us “the real story.”

As far as I’m concerned, it’s looking more and more like some adolescent took a screwdriver to the board and could be faking the whole thing.

You know better, why don’t you share?

    Thanks for reading!

We realize it is your sole possession, but you really should think about selling your trailer and enrolling in English classes at your local community college. Once you do that you may even be eligible to apply for a job at your local Burger King. In the meantime please refrain from posting your incomprehensible hogwash in this public forum.

Brody, we truly appreciate the hard work you put in to maintain this blog.

    Wow…

Aside from your inability to communicate effectively in even the most basic form of English, you certainly are an ignorant twat, aren’t you?

This story’s been good enough for (and I provided my source to) both The Shark Research Committee and The International Shark Attack file, but an *anonymous* commenter doubts our integrity …

Oh no! Whatever will we do?

Answer: focus on the thousands of readers who appreciate the hard work we put in, and continue to report on shark attack news and information with unparalleled passion and objectivity. Cheers!

    Brody,
Confidential newa sourse, thats a bunch of bull sh*t. If it was a news sourse then it would be front page of the Lompoc Record, but it hasn’t. I hope you selling more books or making good money on this sh*t.

Hey, we’re all gonna die eventually. Might as well go doing what you love. Better than a stroke or a brain tumor. On the other hand, this might be a great way to thin the lineup……..

Surf Beach is one of the best breaks North of Rincon. And this close call with Jaws is exactly why it goes largely un-ridden. The locals know that Avila is a safer bet for shark free waves.

I only surf when there are at least 45 other guys in the lineup that gives me a 2.2% chance of getting attacked if there should be one

Who are you calling a kook? I have lived in the San Fernando Valley and have had an 818 area code my whole life. I am proud to call Zuma, Malibu, and many other beaches along PCH my home, even though I do not live there. During the winter I also consider Rincon my home break because all my friends and I drive up there so much and it’s only a 45 minute drive.

Is it really my fault because there is no beach in the Valley?

I have said it once and I will say it again, if you do get the urge to surf in SB County unless you want to get mauled by a great white shark you should stick to Carpinteria State Beach…The World’s Safest Beach (except for that seal rookery a couple miles South) !

we need a shark attack in the ventura area maybee some of you kooks will stay at home

  • El Conejo

Yes, Santa Barbara County is very dangerous place to surf due to the abundance of large and hungry sharks. Rincon is to be especially avoided! Summer is the only safe time to surf here.

I got the email too and heard about it from friends…it is real.

Though I heard, based on analysis of the bite marks, that the animal was estimated to be 18′ in length!

If there is one true thing in this life, it is that there are very large great white sharks around the Point Conception area of northern santa barbara county…scary stuff.

Yes, this is real. I received the email in question after it had been forwarded a number of times, but have no reason to doubt its authenticity. I’ve communicated about the incident with Ralph Collier at The Shark Research Committee and I believe he will be looking into it further – attempting to contact the victim, etc.

Thanks for reading The Fear Beneath and check back for further updates!

    SB Surf Rat:

There are several readers who have blogged on TFB about how unsafe the waters are of Northern Santa Barbara County. Martin even posted pictures of seals who were slaughtered by great white sharks not too long ago. Martin should be given much praise for being on the forefront of this story and for attempting to bring awareness to the general public.

How much more evidence does the public need before they realize they should avoid the waters North of Gaviota???
