Shark Attacks Surfer in Surf Beach, Lompoc
(Santa Barbara County)

SURF BEACH, LOMPOC

NORTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Our sources tell us that while out surfing, a friend of theirs – Kyle (last name withheld,) was on “the outside reform” at Surf Beach Monday when a large shark began to circle him. Kyle used his surfboard as a shield and pointed the fins of his board towards the shark.

The result are these AMAZING pictures… Be sure to notice the diameter of the shark’s mouth – it is tremendous!

This looks to us like a Great White Shark, possibly 14-16 feet in length, doing some late summer hunting at your local surf spot! Be certain to use caution and have a high awareness level when recreating in this area for at least the next week.

I have been surfing the central coast for over 30 years. I have encountered numerous GW’s and only been bothered twice by them. I carry a 12″ bolo knife and if they do fuck with me. I kill them.

I just saw this thread…cannot believe this shark is still around at Surf Beach…but this time finished the job. SCARY.

These beaches have always been considered fishing beaches. Has something changed? Is Vandenberg dumping, as they have in other waters? These beaches have always been beautiful to walk and watch sunsets…surfing? Hmmmm not so much.

Does anyone actually surf, at surf beach? I have NEVER seen anyone in the water so i'm not sure if it's wise for myself to test those waters

last wednesday the 18 was stand up paddling at sunset pacific palisades, been surfing the malibu area since 60's never saw this. size of large dolphin swam under me clear 10 foot to bottom, slowly cursing by large cycle shaped virtical tail extra bloated mid section dark grey brown wide base dorsel fincould not believe i was seeing this. watched it swim fifty feet away towards surfer then turned back towards me but did not get an aggressive vib it seemed to be closer to the bottom maybe looking for fish it then turned away from me and went south towards beach club. hard to say but had to be 8 foot range. really amazing told the surfer it swam towards but he diden't seem to believe me or be concerned.

My buddy and I launched our boat at Gaviota to fish near Point Conception yesterday. I swear to god we saw the biggest shark I have ever seen. It was a great white at least 15 feet long and surfaced when i was bringing in a decent sized catch. It grabbed my catch when it was near the surface and the line snapped in all of 2 seconds. My friend shit in his pants. I’ve seen sharks along this stretch of coast before but never a GW.

yah?I have a few of those get away fish stories too.lol.Next time bring your shark pole its time to open up shark season.

You guys are ridiculous, your assumptions and uneducated comments about Great White Sharks are ludicrous. They are an amazing, calculated, and cautious predator. They are not man eaters and spend 85% of their life’s in the open ocean. When they do swim along the surf line, it is to rest and absorb the high levels of oxygen that are churned up by the surf. A 16 foot animal can NOT SWIM IN A KELP FOREST, around yes. And if they really were a menace to the ocean they would NOT be protected and there would be far more attacks on people. The Great White Sharks on the North American Coast are the largest in the world, they EAT ELEPHANT SEALS, which are 2000 pound + pieces of fat, they do not eat boney pieces of s**t like you. I repeat if we were on their menu, there would be a lot more dead surfer, but magically there is not, I wonder why. Great White Sharks are a magnificent animals that command respect, much is still unknown about them, but there is a great deal we have researched and know, I will not explain any further on this forum for fear that it will fall on deaf ears. If you really do have a fear of sharks because of ignorance or fear from movies (same thing), I suggest learning to scuba dive and actually sticking your head underwater to see what is going on down there. See how depleted our oceans are from fishing and polluting and how scarce sharks really are. Take a trip to the Channel Islands and see for yourself. You will also see how humans have depleted and abused the oceans resources and how vulnerable the ecosystem is. We hold the balance of the ocean at our fingertips, with our decisions to recycle or litter, to eat fish from dredge net fishermen, and to dump our waste in the ocean. Finally if I ever see someone hunting a Great White Shark, I can promise I will do the same to you.

      Dear Mike
I live in Florida, the shark bite capital of the world. I agree that most shark attacks are due to muddy water and mistaken identity, or other cases of just bad timing such as swimming with baitfish. The bull shark is far more dangerous than the white shark, yet white sharks attack their prey on the first strike and try to injure it, so they can return to eat their food without damage to their eyes or body –or having to expell energy that is more than the energy they consume. This poor surfer was “probed” by a very large white shark and it killed them. Yes, it is to bad that this magnificant fish eats people and if I ever come across one that is unprotected waters, rest assured it is one dead shark. It’s people like you that should be eaten. How soon we forget. Haven’t you ever read the story of Timothy Treadwell?

    • Berninfl

      Oh Mike,
The Kelp beds off of Californias coasts do not stop 15-20 foot GW sharks LOL. Where did you here this rubbish. I’m sure you are a believer and every one has the right to believe in what they want –even if they’re wrong.
Best regards to you and yours
