Hot off the presses, this news comes to us by way of the Hong Kong Standard. We will update the story as more information becomes available.

A fishermen was killed by a shark while checking his nets in the northern Philippines, police said.

Joel Bacud, 39, was killed when he jumped from his boat to check nets while fishing with his son off Paoay town in far northern Luzon on Thursday, said Senior Inspector Dexter Corpuz.

Bacud’s son summoned other fishermen to help but when they pulled Bacud from the water, he was already dead with shark bites on his right rib cage and chest, Corpuz said.

The police chief did not know what type of shark attacked Bacud and said no one in the town could recall a similar attack in waters off Paoay.
