Supervising State Park Ranger Robert Colligan said Sunday that the man in his 50s sustained minor injuries and was able to paddle himself to shore. The 11:30 a.m. attack happened at Sand Spit beach in the Montana De Oro State Park west of San Luis Obispo.
Colligan says the man was one of several surfers in the water.
He says witnesses reported the shark being between 8 and 10 feet long.
He says the shark bit the man on his right hip; the man was flown to a local hospital for treatment.
Colligan says the beach is not closed, but signs are posted warning the public of the attack.
