A group of Southern Paua divers is concerned its members’ lives are being endangered by a shark tourism operation in Foveaux Strait. The divers are worried the Great White Southern Dive Company operation will encourage shark attacks and endanger divers. The company runs caged diving trips to view sharks.

A Central Coast man is in hospital after being attacked by a shark at Avoca Beach earlier today. The man was bitten by the shark while swimming with his granddaughter close to the shore of the patrolled surf beach.

A young lifeguard disappeared in a “pool of blood” in the fourth shark attack at a South African beach in two years. Witnesses said the 22-year-old waved his hands frantically in the air before being dragged under by a shark after paddling on a surf board off the coast of Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.

NBA star and Shanghai Sharks owner Yao Ming urged China on Friday to say no to shark fin soup to stop the overfishing of some species amid growing demand for the delicacy. The Houston Rockets centre who recently bought his hometown’s professional team, unveiled a television commercial aimed at wealthy Chinese which urges them to stop ordering shark fin soup.

“We’ve witnessed a tiger shark attack on Dunham. He’s mortally wounded,” said McCulloch, a Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution director. “There may be a possibility we need to euthanize him.” About 400 miles away, Kevin Walsh answered his phone at the Gulf World Marine Park. The dolphin he had helped nurse from near death for seven months now needed to die.

Thursday, July 23rd saw the beginnings of a pumping south swell — and a white shark spotted about 300 yards off Malibu. This is on the heels of many sightings at both San O and Sunset Beach in LA.

The shark came completely out of the water and turned on its back so I coudl see its white bellly and dark gray back, The shark appeared to be about 5-6 feet in length.

There is no scientific evidence that Oahu North Shore cage-diving tours increase shark attack risk for recreational ocean users in near-shore waters, a two-year study of shark behavior concluded. Scientists from the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology noted a lack of proof during the latest shark tour debate, said biologist Carl Meyer.
